Modernizing public-facing applications requires the ability to integrate diverse datasets, automate workflows, and present information in a way that supports mission outcomes. Across the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Esri ArcGIS Online (AGOL) has become a key platform for delivering innovative web applications and story maps that improve transparency, efficiency, and engagement. Below are three examples where Esri ArcGIS Online Map Viewing Solutions were applied to advance BLM programs.
Transmission Line Co-Location App
Leveraging National Renewable Energy Coordination Office (NRECO) data, this in-progress initiative establishes a repeatable process to streamline ingestion, transformation, and display of datasets for major transmission lines, gen-ties, renewable energy, and solar energy zones. The application maps transmission lines across geographic areas to help identify optimal co-location opportunities for additional utilities such as fiber optics. Data comes from multiple internal BLM sources, with records containing anywhere from zero to twenty attributes. Automated workflows standardize these disparate inputs into a unified, public-facing web application for consistent and reliable outputs across BLM’s NRECO Web, ROW Planning Tool, and Hub Site.

Artist in Residence Story Map
The Artist-in-Residence program demonstrates how AGOL can be used not just for operational data but also for cultural storytelling. This project created a story map highlighting the BLM’s first Artist-in-Residence multi-site tour, featuring Native American jazz trumpeter Delbert Anderson and his ensemble D’DAT. The tour spanned several National Conservation Lands sites, where the group researched Indigenous land stories, held workshops, and collaborated with students to compose original music. Each stop concluded with an outdoor performance celebrating America’s public lands. The story map incorporated text, images, videos, and interactive maps to showcase the journey, cultural engagement, and final performances. Lessons learned included metadata management, accessibility compliance, and leveraging Esri StoryMaps’ enhanced multimedia capabilities for public-facing engagement.
Conclusion
These examples underscore how BLM is using Esri AGOL to modernize data presentation and strengthen engagement with both internal staff and the public. From mapping energy infrastructure and addressing staffing challenges to celebrating Indigenous culture through interactive storytelling, AGOL solutions deliver value across mission areas. As datasets grow in size and complexity, these approaches demonstrate the importance of automation, integration, and innovation in turning information into insight.
